LABUAN: Labuan’s health department is currently battling three active Covid-19 clusters, two of which cause more infections and spread faster, said its director, Dr Ismuni Bohari. on October 28 and the Bukit Kuda and Jalan Jati clusters which surfaced on November 18 and 21 respectively. “The Merinding 2 cluster was born after several students from the mainland (Sabah) registered for the new semester. The infection has spread to the hostel’s students and staff, but the group is manageable, ”he said Thursday.
He said the Bukit Kuda cluster emerged as a result of a family here holding an engagement ceremony with relatives from the mainland entering the island for it. “This group has spread widely among those who attended the ceremony… and we are still seeking close contacts for testing, and efforts are being made to break the chain of infection,” he said. Dr Ismuni said the Jalan Jati cluster involved a downtown Jalan Jati bistro with several patrons believed to have caused the infections.
“These two clusters (Bukit Kuda and Jalan Jati) have moved to the third generation of cases, we are doing an analysis on each case,” he said. The cumulative cases in Labuan stand at 10,378, with currently 140 active cases. The duty-free island has recorded 150 deaths from the pandemic to date. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and or WhatsApp channel (s) for the latest news you don’t want to miss.
